    greenSTUDIO is a sustainability consulting group focused on the built environment dedicated to providing innovative,  timely, and informative consultation to assist building owners and operators in their effort to realize sustainability objectives and reduce their environmental impact in a fiscally and socially responsible way. 

    As a division of Hastings Architecture Associates, LLC located in Nashville, Tennessee, our background is rooted in architectural practice with extensive project management experience. We are well suited to explain concepts to a CEO, facilitate discussions among a design team, assist contractors with implementation, or coach an building manager with operational procedures. 

     

    APPROACH

    greenSTUDIO has a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic factors involved with building and land development and operation. While we prefer to engage with our clients as early in the process as feasible, we are comfortable plugging in at any point along the way.  Acting with a sense of urgency appropriate for the project’s pace and schedule, our approach begins with identifying opportunities and challenges posed by each unique project, followed by facilitation among project team members to identify solutions that solve problems, have low-environmental impact, and respect the financial barriers and potential savings as a result.

    Mike Leonard / Managing Principal

    Mike Leonard is the Managing Principal of greenSTUDIO, a division of Hastings Architecture Associates, LLC. Mike holds a Bachelor's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a dual Masters degree in Architecture and Construction Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

    Mike is a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Middle Tennessee Chapter and former three term Chairman of the Board of Directors. In 2002, he became one of the first architects in Tennessee to earn the LEED Accredited Professional credential. Since that time, Mike has developed extensive knowledge of the LEED green building rating system; serving as a facilitator for design teams and building owners on integrated design strategies and managing the LEED certification process. In 2015 he was elevated to LEED Fellow by the US Green Building Council.

    Mike has also served on the Board of Directors for the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Nashville Chapter and is a past president. In 2005, he received the Environmental Stewardship Award from CSI for his promotion of green building principles. He speaks regularly on topics of sustainable design and LEED certification and has given presentations at various local and national conferences.

    Erica is a seasoned professional in the facilitation of high performance building projects, particularly those pursing LEED Certification. She is an avid proponent of green building and evidence based design. She earned her first LEED AP credential in 2006 and has participated as a LEED project manager on a wide range of projects in both Tennessee and California. Erica was one of the first 100 people in the country to earn EDAC credentials to help integrate research into the practice of design.

David is a present board member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Green Hills Family YMCA, AIA Tennessee Board Member, Tennessee Agriculture PAC (TAPAC) Chair, Rotary Member, and Leadership Middle Tennessee, Inc. His past responsibilities included Chair of the AIA Middle Tennessee Committee on the Environment (COTE), President of the Davidson County Chapter University of Tennessee, Vice President of the Historic Edgefield Neighborhood Board, and the Board of Governs Appointee of the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association.

    Whether a building space is newly constructed or has been in operation for many years, our building evaluation services are intended to identify potential for improvement with utility consumption as well as janitorial products and procedures, material purchases, material recycling, integrated pest management, and indoor air quality.

    ENERGY MODELER

    Job Description

    greenSTUDIO is seeking a highly motivated Energy Modeler to assist our sustainability consulting group. The EM position will be responsible for preparing energy simulation models for the purpose of evaluating energy conservation strategies in architectural design projects, in addition to preparing documentation required for LEED certification.

    This position will be responsible for:

    - Preparation of preliminary and final design
      energy simulation models for LEED project documentation.
    - Preparation of written summary reports and
       presentations to client and project team members.
    - Uploading results and supporting documentation from the
       energy modeling process to LEED Online.
    - Responding to requests for clarifications from LEED
       project reviewers as they relate to the energy model.
    - Review of non-LEED architecture projects for determination of best practices
       for orientation, skin and electricity-consuming systems.

    The Energy Modeler must demonstrate:

    - Comprehensive understanding of all the building systems related to energy performance
       and the information needed to construct a model using the selected software.
    - Ability to understand and explain capabilities and limitations of modeling software for the
       strategies the team would like to pursue. - Awareness of how much time the design team
       needs to provide information, feedback, and responses to the modeling exercise.
    - Experience with design phase modeling.
    - Ability to demonstrate how energy modeling can be used to perform cost-benefit analysis.
    - Experience in modeling projects using ASHRAE 90.1, Appendix G, or a thorough
       understanding of this approach.
    - Ability to perform quality control reviews to ensure that modeling inputs accurately reflect
       the proposed and Appendix G baseline design.
    - Ability to validate the model through review of actual utility bills during occupancy.

    Requirements:

    - Bachelor degree in architecture, mechanical engineering, or related field (emphasis on
       energy management is preferred).
    - Energy modeling experience: 3 years +
    - A strong background in sustainable design solutions and LEED green building certification.
    - LEED AP BD+C credential (must be obtained within one year of employment).
    - Ability to read construction documents and Revit/ BIM models, and to extrapolate
       information from design narratives.
    - Experience modeling buildings with complex geometry and systems.
    - Proficient in Trace 700 energy modeling software, or other energy modeling software
       approved for LEED project submittal such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, and HAP.
    - Knowledge of conceptual modeling tools like Ecotect, Rhino and Sefaira a plus.
    - Revit proficiency desired.
    - Good working knowledge of IECC codes and ASHRAE Standards, especially 90.1.
    - Self-starter with the ability to interact with a variety of project team members.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Bachelor degree in architecture, mechanical engineering, or related field (emphasis on energy management is preferred). Energy modeling experience: 3 years +
